His name will mean nothing to Americans and Europeans. It may even mean little to many Australians. However, he was a bit of a legend in outback tourism in this country. He pioneered plane based tourism in Australia and Papua New Guinea back in the late 60s and 70s. He certainly had the bush pilot business for well heeled clients down up early.

He was killed yesterday alongside one of his sons (apparently a well regarded hand surgeon) in their car whilst trying to get home after two days of firefighting elsewhere on Kangaroo Island in South Australia. Sadly, they were overrun by the Flinders Chase fire after it responded unexpectedly to a forecast wind change.

The very thought of being incinerated in my our own car gives me so many shudders...
Glad they've managed to reduce the list. Hopefully, today and tonight (and next weekend) doesn't add to it...
